The Wrap Up

It's odd to think we've done an entire semester if schooling during a pandemic. There were a lot of things that we had to do differently this year, some good and some bad. All in all, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We read some wonderful stories, watched a decent movie, wrote some lively blogs, and were able to meet as normally as possible. I really can't complain about this one, which s odd considering I can normally complain about nearly anything. In the long run, I hope the efforts made throughout this semester work out well for us.  Being completely honest, I am not sad to see this semester end. This was a hard run, and with zero breaks added in, an exhausting one as well. Winter break being extra long is definitely something I am looking forward to. Christmas cookies are about to be baked in plentiful amounts. Hallmark movies will be binged day and night to satisfy the heart. A tree and bright lights soon to be put up will (hopefully) bring cheer and ...

Oh, The Things I Long For

everyone has an idealistic lifestyle. although i previously addressed my longing for multiple different parts of me for multiple experiences, i   feel i owe it to those who read this to understand my ideal life. before it is put into question, i am going to write this in all lowercase letters even though i am in fact an english major.  i think a cottage on the outskirts of town would be suitable. small enough to remain inconspicuous, large enough to be comfortable for myself and a couple pets. i think my cottage would be made of stone with moss and ivy creeping up the sides of it. a kitchen large enough to bake fresh foods in and windows big enough to provide enough light for indoor plants. a faint smell of wildflowers picked in a vase on the kitchen table. a cozy fireplace to snuggle up in front of with a book, a blanket and a cup of tea. small nooks and crannies filled with little tokens of my journey.  a river flowing beside the cottage, teeming with live and...

Reflections On This Semester

I don't think anyone really knew how this semester was going to play out. We all came into this fairly confused, some of us still are pretty confused. What I do 100% know now is that college kids should not be forced to school for three months during a global pandemic with zero breaks other than weekends. It's exhausting. There's still three weeks to go in this semester and I genuinely just want to be done. Mentally I am ready to never look at a book again. THAT says something. Physically, my body is drained. I do not want to get out of bed, and most of the time I don't even want to open my eyes. The little sleep I do get is always interrupted by the blaring of an alarm. Emotionally, I am exhausted. At this point, my literal only goal is to just pass my classes. I had such high standards for myself coming into this semester, but honestly, no longer do I wish to fulfil them.      It's hard to be a teenager, a student, and all the other roles we p...

Thoughts About Why Anne Is One Of My Favorite Jane Austen Characters Of All Time

We all know I have a deep rooted love for Ms. Jane Austen. She is a fierce writer who can often be heard of interjecting her own thoughts and ideologies into her stories. As such, she very much displays herself in her character Anne Elliot of Persuasion. Anne is a feminine young woman who has many thoughts and opinions that are not classic of women in this time period. She is witty, smart mouthed and headstrong. Although she once had, and arguably still does, have a love for Frederick Wentworth, she does not feel as if she ever needs a man in order to complete her. (Yay for JA adding that detail in, we love to see it). Many women of the time are catty and seek a higher standing on society. Anne, however, is perfectly comfortable with herself in whole. She is smart and caring, often displaying that to those around her.      Anne is often persuaded (hence the title, ahem) throughout the novel. Although some may see this as a flaw, it genuinely mig...

Is Doing Something Good Actually Good If You Don't Brag About It?

Boswell claims he decided to keep a journal in order to track things he does and says he plans to only include the moral things, while excluding the things that would make him sound like a bad person. This is both bold and ironic to me.      Although I completely understand wanting to be seen as a good person, Boswell might not understand that as well. I also understand that keeping a journal may help persuade someone to be a better version of themselves. Again, Boswell might not. Let's dive in. (pun intended because my last blog was on sharks).      So we all know that Boswell wrote about only including things that make him seem like a good person in his journal. This leads to the question: what on earth did he exclude? He talks about himself in a way that seems nearly narcissistic. He writes about giving money to the poor, which seems good, but is doing something nice really good if you feel you must brag about it? This is only the fir...

A List of My Favorite Sharks and Why :)

Image
Hammer Head Sharks: literally these ones are the cutest and you cannot tell me otherwise. I adore these with my whole heart and soul. The average size of these sharks is 11.5 feet, but the largest reported one was about 20 feet!!! They average about 500 lbs, but can weigh up to 1,000 lbs.  Megalodon Sharks: These are genuinely terrifying. Although they are considered to be extinct, I have a theory that they actually are one of very few sea creatures that dwell in the absolute bottom of the ocean, a place where people have not yet been able to travel due to the pressure water causes on submarines. Body estimates for the meg range anywhere from 30 to 66 feet in length. That is anywhere from about 6 to 12 me's laying head to toe combined. Frightening.  Mako Sharks: These short finned sharks are about 14 feet long in average. They belong to the white shark family. They normally do not go near the shore, but they are known for a few attacks on humans. They are also known for ...

Holidays Ranked By My "Expert" Opinion

  1. Halloween- Spooky season is my favorite time of the year. It's chilly enough outside to use the fuzziest blankets you own, the perfect weather to drink hot chocolate, and (hopefully) snow has not started to fall yet. (That's not always the case, but hey, one can dream.) Scary movies, along with my favorite childhood Halloween movies (ie. Scary Godmother, Halloweentown, Hocus Pocus etc.) are constantly playing and that gives me a sincere surge of happiness.  2. Thanksgiving- You're lying if you say you don't love Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a fairly big holiday for my family, and it makes me extremely grateful that there are some amazing cooks in my family. We often take things for granted, and I appreciate a day where we can all come together, be thankful for what we have, eat amazing food, and watch a good football game.  3. Christmas- Snow is pretty as long as you don't have to drive in it. Christmas is the one day I absolutely adore having snow outside. My...
